Intrinsic Safety Systems Key Considerations for Barrier Selection
últimas noticias de la compañía sobre Intrinsic Safety Systems Key Considerations for Barrier Selection

Intrinsic safety (IS) is an explosion-protection strategy that limits the electrical energy available to equipment in hazardous locations, preventing sparks or heat from igniting flammable flammable gases or dust. Rather than enclosing high-energy circuits in heavy explosion-proof housings, IS systems constrain voltage and current at the source so that normal operation and specified fault conditions remain below ignition thresholds. The approach is widely used for low-power instrumentation and sensors in petrochemical, pharmaceutical and other process industries.

How intrinsic safety works

In hazardous environments where flammable gases or dust may be present, a spark or hot surface from electrical equipment can trigger an explosion. Intrinsic safety addresses that risk by capping the energy delivered to the hazardous area. Certified circuits are designed so that voltage and current remain insufficient to ignite the surrounding mixture, even under defined fault conditions.

Unlike explosion-proof enclosures, which contain an internal explosion and prevent flame propagation, IS systems avoid the ignition hazard at the source. That distinction allows for lighter, lower-power field devices and simpler wiring practices in many installations, although the method is restricted to circuits that meet strict energy limits.

Core components of an intrinsic safety system

A typical IS installation consists of three linked elements: the field device, the energy-limiting barrier or isolator, and the interconnecting wiring. Each part must be compatible with the others and certified for the specific hazardous-area classification.

  • Intrinsic safety device: Installed in the hazardous area, these are usually low-voltage DC instruments with power consumption typically below 1 watt.
  • Energy-limiting device: Mounted in the non-hazardous area, an IS barrier or galvanic isolator limits the voltage and current supplied to the hazardous area.
  • Associated wiring: The cable connecting the two areas must meet electrical and installation requirements defined by the relevant standards.

Protection methods compared

Intrinsic safety is one of several explosion-protection techniques. Its suitability depends on the power level, physical constraints and certification requirements of the application.

Protection method Characteristics Typical application
Intrinsic safety (IS) Lightweight, low energy consumption, moderate cost Low-voltage, low-power instruments and sensors
Explosion-proof enclosure Robust construction, large footprint, higher cost High-power, high-voltage equipment

Because IS equipment operates at low energy, it cannot be certified for high-power loads. Applications that require greater power generally rely on explosion-proof housings or other protection methods.

Selection and installation considerations

Intrinsic safety equipment must be installed in accordance with certification requirements from recognized authorities such as FM, CSA or PTB. During selection, users should verify the power supply requirements and the electrical characteristics of the signal terminals. A maximum-load calculation is necessary to confirm that total circuit impedance will not reduce voltage below the device’s operating threshold.

Wiring length also affects circuit behavior and must be evaluated as part of the complete system. Because the barrier, field device and cable interact electrically, changes to one element can alter the overall energy balance and require re-verification against the applicable certification limits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can intrinsic safety equipment be used in high-power applications?
No. Intrinsic safety is limited to low-voltage, low-power devices such as instruments and thermocouples. High-power equipment cannot be certified under intrinsic safety and requires another protection method, such as an explosion-proof enclosure.
How should an intrinsic safety barrier be selected?
Selection requires checking the device’s power supply requirements, the electrical characteristics of its signal terminals and the total circuit impedance. A matching calculation should be performed for the specific device model and installation environment.
Where must intrinsic safety devices and barriers be installed?
Intrinsic safety devices are installed in the hazardous area, while the energy-limiting barrier or isolator must be installed in the non-hazardous area. This placement ensures that the power supply remains strictly limited before it enters the hazardous location.
